HALOE V20
HALogen Occultation Experiment V20 Algorithm Development
The goal of the HALOE V20 algorithm improvements is to enhance our understanding of the interaction of transport and chemistry in the middle to lower atmosphere.

HALOE V20

Specifically, our studies are in four areas:

  1. Reprocess the HALOE data set using a suite of improved algorithms that extend or enhance H2O and O3 measurements well into the upper troposphere.
  2. Conduct detailed data validation studies of this reprocessed data.
  3. Construct climatologies of upper-troposphere O3 and H2O to garner information on transport and climate, polar ozone lost climatology and climatologies of HCl and HF.
  4. Study long-term changes and variability using these new data products.

The existing 14 years of HALOE data uniquely allow examination of both temporal and zonal averages of upper-troposphere/lower-stratosphere O3 and H2O; furthermore, the data set allow studies of variability in these two regions due to natural and anthropogenic forcing. The HALOE V20 data product aids in an expanded understanding of trace gas transport, chemistry, and associated coupling in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere. It provides essential information for assessing the role of anthropogenic versus natural processes in global climate change.
